Colt Navy Pocket

My family has what I've learned is a Colt 1851 Navy Pocket, seems like the serial number (17####) makes it a late Fourth Model, and it's in the original box. In my research I came across the following page, which shows almost exactly this pistol, though ours isn't in quite this good condition (I'm shortening the url because it's very long):

Ours has the same cylinder engraving as shown there, velvet lining is a different color, powder horn thingy is different/less fancy, but the set is complete, all numbers match, and it seems functional. In the box we found a card from Curious George Collectables up in Aspen, who I think my father contacted once to ask about estimating value and such. Notes on the card say we should just call Colt, ask for the Historians and provide a description of all engravings etc. Does anyone know of a good place to go (closer to greater Denver would be great) where I could get an appraisal, OR... does anyone have experience with restoration of such a pistol, recommendations etc? It's not for sale (I don't even have it right now), but I may be interested in restoring it and getting a formal appraisal.

I would say talk to the owner of "The Blunderbuss" on west Colfax. IMO & personal understanding, to modify it in any way takes away from it's value. Restoration is in the eye of the be-holder, I have been told many times by other collectors to not touch some of my muzzle loader/musket rifles. I am cleaning the bores out and some of the dirt/debris, but not touching the rifles in any other way.

Yeah, for sure don't restore it! Unless it's just a completely rusted hulk. Otherwise you'll destroy it's value. Man, what a treasure.

Thanks guys. I got through to the Colt historians and they said what you did - I will not be restoring it in any way. Unfortunately they didn't have any papers for that serial number, which I guess could have added even more to the value.

Further research has made me believe it's actually an "1849 Pocket Model", and the serial number indicates it was made in 1860. It'll probably be a few months before it's in my hands, but I'll try to post some photos once I get it.
