Looking to see what kind of range they have?
Depends.. you can get them that will cover more than a mile.. How much money do you want to spend and how far do you want to go.. Are there buildings in the way? Hills? Trees? Water? (oddly bodies of water can attenuate some RF/wifi signals) Indoor? Outdoor?
Most of 'em use 802.11b or 802.11g WIFI protocols.
My experience with the wifi ones is that they can be placed up to 100 ft from the router with typical residential walls. The ones at the house work pretty well most of the time, but sometimes when Buckley is monkeying with their Doppler gear, they can drop out. The ones at the shop act much better. These are all eBay specials. For serious security applications, go wired or stick with name brands like Sony.
you need power anyway, why not just go wired.
I guess specifics would help. [facepalm]
Basically I'm trying to build a spotting scope using a wireless camera and a laptop or my phone. There are systems on the market for around $500+ so I was just looking to see if you could build one cheaper. Right now it would need to range out to 600 yards.
That changes things as you don't need concealment. Wifi can do that range outdoors easily with a good antenna on each end.
There might be some other options. I will look into it. They have cell network breakout boards and xbee transmitters for arduino that would work anywhere (even without cell network) and they are pretty cheap. That is a cool idea, I will put a little thought into it tonight.
I'm also looking for recommendations but I need a 4 camera system for my house. All 4 will be exterior mounted. Wireless or wired, I'm open to either.
I have been shopping around and the prices and I'm sure quality vary greatly. Never heard of any of the brands.
I'm using Logitech Wilife cameras. Gotta have a computer that runs XP or Vista. I'm using a Dell Vostro 400 desktop. Alot of my other computers crash when I tried this system on them.
