So, I have been wanting a lever gun for a long time, firstly I want to pick up a larger caliber(.30/.30 + or ??) .... If I was looking for the best function/fit/accuracy price be damned, what should I chase after? Not looking for a collector per se, I just like the idea of a nice lever gun for mule deer hunting and their aesthetics.(That, and I grew up watching The Rifleman?:))
I have a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington that I like a lot. 200gr projectile can be effective on elk as well.
A good friend shoots a Savage 99 in 300 Savage, but you can also get those in 308. They have a rotary mag instead of a tube, so you don't need to shoot soft point bullets.
I've had thoughts of getting a 30-30, but I like the option of more power for closer range elk too.
Find A marlin pre safety then send it off to be slicked up by a reputable smith. Caliber is kind of a personal touch once you get past the minimum power required for deer
If you want to be really cliche get a jon Wayne commemorative edition in gold
Henry big boys are also quite nice but I think the Marlins turn out nicer after the smith gets done
I really like the browning blr lots of caliber to choose from mag fed so no ammo restrictions, and they make a take down that fits in a pack. Very accurate out of the box.
if I rem correctly 223-450 Marlin are avail. Mine are 308 and 30-06 they also make all weather versions.
I think Henry makes the nicest lever gun on the market right now. Made in the USA and they stand behind their product. I'm a proud owner of a H010 and I couldn't be happier.
Pre-Remington Marlins (look for the JM stamp on the barrel) are also excellent.
Winchester left a friend high and dry recently when the carrier broke 20 rounds in on a new model 94.

My vote is that you can't go wrong with a Marlin 336 in .30-30 as you can pick one up fairly inexpensively and if you like it go from there and get the big medicine - a Guide Gun in .45-70.
Just watch the Marlins produced when Remington first bought them; they are a little iffy in the QC department and some had issues. I think they bought them late in 2007.
