Barrel Nut Grease

So, I did some searching and I didn't see a thread on this, so I though I'd kick it off.

What types, brands, etc. of grease are you using when you install the barrel nut on an AR-15 rifle?

I heard this is a popular grease as it contains no graphite and is recommended by the M-16 TM:

Personally, I've used wheel bearing grease - provided it does not contain graphite. Such as: https://www.amazon.com/Valvoline-VV2.../dp/B000CQ6L3C

There are a metric ton of thoughts on this and if Rob still frequents the forum I would like to hear his input on this as well. Curious to hear what Bert has to say as well. Always like hearing from the pros. ;)

What’s the thought behind specifically not having graphite?

I’ve heard copper base anti-seize is best, but have seen several folks use regular graphite based anti seize without issue on uppers that have undergone multiple barrel swaps.

White lithium lube , applied to cleaned surfaces, same stuff i've used for many a year. Even use it (lightly) on the bbl extension to receiver surface.
Might as well have asked which is better an AR or AK, Ford/Chevy question ;)

I roll exclusively with Aeroshell 33. The TM recommends it, I figure they may know a touch more about it than me.
Generally any lube is better than no lube but yes, you should pay attention to what's in it. Graphite is bad juju, it can lead to corrosion issues in a wet / humid environment.
For a long time I used FelPro moly based antiseize, never an issue but I do know there are some antiseize's with graphite.
Try this next time you do a new build: when it comes to torqueing the barrel nut snug the nut on the receiver / barrel DRY 3-4 times (just snug the threads then back off, re snug) and then clean the nut & receiver threads with brake clean or similar, let it dry then do your final assembly with the threads lubed.
You will find the nut torques up a lot smoother after burnishing the threads a touch.
