Do I need to worry about rust forming on the steel in my rifles or wood warping on them if I keep them in a storage unit in Golden? The unit is like a garage with no climate control. I haven't noticed any problems yet, but thinking long term. Fairly new to the state, but it seems rust really isn't a concern. I feel like I have nothing to worry about, but I figured I would ask people who have been here for longer and/or have experience with storing guns in their garage or in a storage unit.
I would clean and oil them up as anyone should in the first place and check on them every couple months or so.. I shoot corrosive ammo in my AK74s without cleaning them on a regular basis and I have yet to see the dreaded pitting and corrosion that is supposed to happen. Colorado is a pretty dry climate for the most part. They should be OK if you make an effort. I would be more concerned about theft.
I have bare metal that has been sitting in my garage for probably fifteen years that doesn’t have a spot of surface rust on it yet. I’d venture to guess your stuff would be just fine.
I’d be more concerned about security issues storing them that way than I would anything else as well.
Sounds like they should be fine and I made sure the facility was in a nice area and I like the people who run it.
Back when I was on Active Duty and living in the barracks, post policy was that POWs (Privately Owned Weapons) were required to be registered with the PMO (Provost Marshal's Office - the Military Police Station), kept in the Company arms room and could only be removed with the permission of the Commander (which would basically mean if I wanted to go shooting I had to notify the CO, and arrange for the company armorer to open the arms room twice - once when I drew the weapons and once when I returned them.) A total PITA and a good way to make the armorer hate your guts (since you'd be making him come to work on his "day off.")
Of course, this only applied to firearms that were kept on-post, so I said F*** that nonsense and when I went to a new duty station, my first stop was always at one of those "u-stor-it" chains where I'd rent a 5' x 5' or 5' x 10' storage unit for about $50/month and my guns and ammo went there. No registering with the PMO, no keeping them in the arms room for the armorer to mess with. Any time I wanted to go shooting I'd go to the off-post storage unit, pick up my guns and go shooting, then return them. Some of the storage places had 24 hour access, others would close by 7:00 or so, but either way it was easy to make it back before they closed and that way I never had to worry about getting caught with a firearm in the barracks.
Anyway, my point is that this was in North Carolina (Fort Bragg) and Washington (Fort Lewis) both of which are very humid climates. I kept my long guns in cases and my handguns in rugs and never had any issues with rust. So here in dry CO I don't think you have anything to worry about. ;)
