I'm experimenting with cheaper, decent time storage meats that I can use in backpacking meals. I've experimented with pork floss and it works ok but want to try out summer sausage for things like chili. However, in order to make it worthwhile on the trail I would need 6 oz or less. I know you can get 16 oz cheap but having a hard time finding 6oz and under locally or at a reasonable price. Anyone got knowledge of something like that? 1 or 2oz would even be more ideal.

I've seen these at Sprouts, Safeway, Walmart, etc.
They sell the duke's sausages at costco also.
My only concern is that "jerky" like that has a harder outer coating which although useable is a little more difficult to cook with that say a summer sausage where you remove the casing and dont have a hardened, dried outer shell anymore. Know what I mean? Of course you can get 2-6 oz sausages in those trial kits or samplers but what sucks is a 16oz regular one is $4.50 and those kits average about $5 for a 6oz one. Lame!
I just went through a bag of Duke's sausages, from Costco. The shell isn't so hard that it'd make anything difficult, imo, except getting it out from between your teeth. The mass produced stuff like Duke's feels like it has a lot more oils in it than a big chunk of summer sausage.
