Need some recommendations for a good mechanic to replace a 2014 Ford Explorer timing chain and associated parts. That's my diagnosis anyway. Trouble code (P0016) and symptoms (cold start rattle and power loss) are very specific to this issue.
In any case, I know the dealership will rape me on what's an already expensive job. Any recommendations?

Sounds like what happened to my Chevy Colorado. Dealer charged me 360 bucks to change out the VVT solenoid. Engine would start, noisy and no power. Changing out the VVT was so easy a caveman could do it. The variable valve solenoid would be would be $30 at rockauto.com
The VVT was attached by one bolt and in a easy location. One electrical plug attaches to the end of the solenoid. Remove & replace would have taken ten minutes
Truck had 135K miles when the VVT failed.
Can I ask, what motor in the 2014 Ford Explorer? And mileage?

TSB below says there is a diagnostic test for this engine. Ford claims the Ecoboost is hard on the engine oil and the first sign of problem will be timing chain. My only advice is find a shop with a Ford IDS to test first. Integrated Diagnostic System. Sounds like you are probably right. I had my reservations when I first heard about Ecoboost engines.
