We, the undersigned, urge the responsible authorities to restore the name of Mount Evans, reversing the recent renaming to Mount Blue Sky. While we recognize the importance of honoring Indigenous cultures, the renaming process overlooked the full historical significance of the original name and the legacy it represents.


Mount Evans was named after John Evans, the second territorial governor of Colorado, who played a pivotal role in the state's early development, including the establishment of the University of Denver and key infrastructure. While his legacy is complex, renaming the mountain erases an important chapter of Colorado?s history rather than fostering meaningful dialogue about it.


The name Mount Evans has been deeply ingrained in Colorado?s culture, geography, and identity for well over a century. It is a landmark known and respected by residents, historians, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Changing its name disregarded public sentiment and historical continuity, setting a precedent of erasing rather than educating.


Instead of renaming, we advocate for educational initiatives, historical markers, and cultural acknowledgments that foster a comprehensive understanding of our state?s past. We believe that history should be preserved and interpreted, not rewritten.
