Magnets on oil filters?

When I drain the oil on my truck, I always get fuzzy metal on the drain plug magnet. I wanted to buy a large curved magnet for the oil filter, but they were $50!. So I went to Harbor Freight and bought a package of small magnets for $2.59. I took some black silicone gasket sealer and put a dab on each magnet. Then I put the magnets on the bottom of the oil filter.

The plan is to pull the magnets off the bottom of the oil filter when it is time to change the oil and filter. Then again use some sealer and glue the magnets back on the new filter.

I used three of the larger round magnets for the bottom of the oil filter.

Use a magnetic drain plug instead. You will be able to see what is sticking to it.
They are a must have in gear cases and differentials.

I will be the first thinking at least the HF version and toss it on the bottom would be a real bad idea.

Why: Depends on the binding agent on the magnet. Also 5lb is not much as magnets go.
Another worry would be placement - would it block the flow of oil.

If you are collecting a bunch of metal particles - going to say that is not a good sign. Back
in the day - new cars would have a bit of crap like that as the oil cleans out the particles from machining.

The transmission pan and differential cover are after market with magnet plugs. I watched some videos of people with magnets on their filters. The magnet attacts all the small metal debris. It is a 7.3L diesel and I want it to last a long time. Fuel sucking stinking pig that uses the oil pressure to drive the fuel injectors.

Speaking of magnets, I use these for hiding pistols under desktops, shelves, any place to hide a popgun. It'll hold a loaded 1911 quite secure. About $5 at Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc. One screw and good to go.

Magnets when heated will fail - depending on how the magnet was made of - depends on the failure temp.

Your best bet is to get a magnetic drain plug. This way they can handle the temp, and the binding agent won't
break down and leave chunks of magnet within the engine.

I have a few magnets that are about the size of a thick coin battery that has pretty much of a death grip.

Every kind of magnet under the sun. For me, their site is almost as dangerous as the DeWalt isle at Murdochs.

I added the magnets Saturday, drove the truck Sunday and they are still on today. This truck is expensive to operate and takes 15 quarts of oil for an oil change. I buy the oil in a 5 gallon bucket.

I sprayed the bottom of the filter with brake cleaner and rubbed the bottom of the filter vigorously with a clean rag to remove any oil film. Then a dab of silicone sealer to each magnet and let dry for a few hours. I did the same to the gas fueled truck.

I like the idea, but you think if there was much benefit to it that someone would come up with an oil filter or some other way to do it? Or is the magnetic plug that solution.?

I removed the plug and installed a valve type plug that will make it easy to drain the oil without using tools. There are products out there for oil filters but they seem terribly expensive and I worry they will fall off on rough mountain roads.
