I have a Win Model 70 that I got last year. I know I ran an oiled patch down the barrel before putting it in the safe but it appears to have some rust building up in the grooves near the muzzle.
I recleaned and oiled it again but it's still there. Will the rust shoot out? Is it something I need to worry about?
sounds like you need to run it really clean with a copper brush. clean it up really well then shoot it several rounds or whatever you want to shoot, then clean it up really well again.
I think you should be fine. as will any metal object rust can occur, just make sure you store it in a dry place.
if you are putting it in a gun case to store it the gun case might have moisture in it, either dry it out really well or buy a new one.
post pictures as well if you can, it will help out so we can see how much rust is really there
It's stored uncased in a large safe in a temp controlled basement. None of my other guns have rusted which is why I am curious. I will clean and shoot and see what happens if the weather is cool enough this weekend.

You have a couple of options.
Soak the area well with automatic tranny fluid and keep it wet. ATF cuts rust well.
One technique I have used is to get a worn out bronze brush and put a couple of wraps of 4/0 steel wool on it. Oil it well and polish the rust out. Make sure the brush is worn out so if you need to reverse the direction of the brush you can while it is still in the bore. Being that your rust is near the muzzle you want to go very lightly, the muzzle is where the accuracy of the rifle is. Dont make any more passes out of the muzzle than is needed to clean up the rust. Some people will use JB bore paste but I personally think it is a bit too abrasive.
The other option is through an electro chemical process that is used on heavily leaded/coppered bores. It will work with rust but you need to be careful as the solution can damage the blueing.
If it is just light surface rust it should clean up without being detrimental to the accuracy of the rifle. If it is pitted then the only true fix is to cut the barrel back and re-crown.
