Semi- or Bolt for first season elk?!

I purchased 2 - .308 rifles this past year and I'm not sure which to take elk hunting with me first season. I'm having a hard time choosing between a 20 inch DPMS LR308T or an FN PBR XP. I love both guns but can't choose between semi or bolt action. What are some feelings/ opinions out there leaning either way?
I've been shooting the crap out of both and feel comfy with either. With the DPMS i'm comfortable out to 400-425ish. With the FN, I feel comfortable out to 5-550. My guess, with the jagoffs I'm going with, anything closer than a grand is gonna get a whiff of the peppermint schnapps and be gone!!!
Both guns are nearly 9.5 to 10 lbs so going lightweight isn't really even an option. I'm literally staying up at night trying to decide!
Hell... should I take 'em both and see what "feels right for the day"?!

I would take them both, it's always a good idea to have a backup just in case. If you are hunting tight country where a shorter shot is likely, I'd use the auto. If you end up in some open country, I'd take the bolt gun out just so you have the reach that you might need.

Let the air out of one!

Zactly I do, if one has a problem you don't miss out on the hunt.

First, I would not be going with ANYONE that combine alcohol and guns. Not a matter of 'if' something goes wrong, but 'when'.

Please let me know which season and where you are going so I can avoid.

Chances are that you're not going after the plains elk, so either should work for the distances you are likely to encounter.

I usually take two rifles also, just in case something happens to one.

The 2 gun plan it is!!! Didn't really think about one not working, so 2 guns it is. The jags I'm going with are good buddies of mine and they are serious about their hunting, so drinking and shooting won't be a problem. It's the drinking after the shooting!!!

I'm going down to units 80 and 81, Alamosa area. Never been down there before so I'm not sure what to expect.

Anybody have any experience in those units?
