Joined the "700 Club"
Well I have long been a Savage fan for their bolt guns but seeing how the 700 is the standard I figured I had better pick one up.
I traded my HK45 for a NIB 700 SPS Varmint .308 with the 26" barrel plus got a couple C notes outta the deal.
Yeah I know it is one of the lower tier models but seeing how 80% of it will eventually be in the parts bin why put out for a BDL or such.
First step? Shitcan the Tupperware stock and bottom metal. I would love an A5 McMillian and Badger but I doubt that will be in the budget for a while. Gonna look at the Bell and Carlson offerings.
Gonna sit down and make a list on this one.............long term project.

Sounds like an interesting project-keep us posted [Beer]

Bell and Carlson have some nice stocks, ive got one on my 700 i love it

Welcome to the club haha. If you are in it for the long haul and want the McMillan A5 you might as well save your money and go for it. You aren't going to be happy if you have your heart set on that but get something else in the meantime. The old adage that I see come up constantly on these precision rigs "buy once - cry once"
-
Well step one is complete. I found a nice little stock for a decent price. Greybull Precision markets what they call the "Hunter" stock. Turns out it is actually a B&C made to Greybulls specs. 13.5 LOP, aluminum bedding block and pretty light. Nice contour, similar to a Mac but not as angular and blocky.
Now to find a trigger and the first real mechanical tweak will be to shit can the factory crown. They are hinky at best and this one is a little off.
One recessed 90 degree crown coming up!
In the meantime I will be saving my lunch money and tips for the strippers toward Badger's DBM goodies.
I will try to post pics a bit later.

Got me :) Not what I was expecting

BP- I'm a dolt when it comes to gun internals and such, but what is the crown and what do you gain modifying it? BTW, I have never owned or shot any real 'long gun' except a 300 win mag last year, and wow big boom.
-
The crown is the tip of the barrel, by recessing some you more or less shroud the rifling which adds a bit of protection if you ever bump or drop it...there's that and it looks kewl too!

You should have stuck with the Savages. $0.02
