I've shot above Caribou which is just N of Nederland. Never checked if it was legal or not but I got away with it, if you make a call and find out, let us know.
Aren't there some decent spots along the Jenny Creek jeep trail?
Jenny creek jeep trail? Where?
Jenny Creek is off of the Rollins Pass trail. From Nederland, head down 119 towards Blackhawk. When you get to Rollinsville, take a right (west). The road goes along Boulder Creek for a few miles. The Rollins Pass trail itself starts near the Moffat train tunnel. This time of year there may be a lot of snow up at the top and you may not be able to get to Jenny Creek. It's a nice ride and when clear of snow, most of Rollins Pass doesn't require high clearance or 4x4. Rising Sun used to maintain Jenny Creek, but I don't know if they still do or not...might check on their forum for a trip report.
Awesome, I'll have to check it out! THANKS!
If shooting up by the moffat and jenny creek, do NOT go onto private land. Don't cross any gates or fences. Gates are marked as private property. I know the land owners up there and they do not take lighly to people trespassing. The sherrif of "Toland" will ticket you or haul ya to boulder county jail, or Gilpin county jail. or wherever the jail is. (never been arrested by him myself) If shooting in the summer, be mindful of direction etc. Lots of hikers, jeepers, mountain bikers etc. Also the rangers will be out on ATVs and jeeps on weekends in the summer. They can be friendly if you are.
I have shot tens of thousands of rounds at caribou. Lots of good spots. Do NOT shoot where the road kinda ends and there is a small parking area. Then the road goes straight up the hill some (to a guys cabin) They guy who lives in the cabin up there does not welcome strangers and does not tollerate shooting. Turn off to your right and follow the road/trail. Lots of good spots in that direction. Both caribou and the moffat, jenny creek, areas are fantastic with a jeep. The potholes can be brutal, so I would suggest a 4x4. It will beat a 2wd sedan style car to bits.
