Wanting advice from the experts regarding my rifle. Trying to do a "budget" precision rifle that is within my limited abilities. I have a Savage 10 heavy barrel in 308. I had BPT shorten the barrel a bit (about 22" total) and do a target crown and install a Vortex flash-hider. It has a Nikon Monarch 3.5-10x40 on it. Shooting just a little with IslanderMyk today intensified my thoughts on an optics upgrade. I'm trying to keep it within $750. I'm thinking about a Leupold 4.5-14x50 with the Boone and Crockett reticle. What do you guys think? All advice appreciated. I am primarily a handgun guy, and am pretty good with one.
I can pull a trigger properly, but long guns have never really been my thang.

I would really recommend a Mil/Mil scope. It has made my life considerable easier. In your price range look at the Vortex PST or The Weaver Tactical. Stay away from Boone & Crockett or BDC reticles (they dont work for a damn for LR) look for Mil-Dot or Mil-Hash reticles.
But to be 100% honest with you buy offgrid's NF and be done with it. He let me shoot it and its perfect.
What about the SWFA SS scopes. 10x42 mil/mil side-focus model?

Here's a 20 minutes review on one of'em SWFA SS scope. Some good info to keep in mind.
Take your time in finding that right glass. "Buy once! Cry once!" that Night force deal on here is a great deal as well... It comes with the rings which is a PLUS!.... Believe me... you will only cry once [Tooth][Beer]
The best part too is that good glass (S&B, Night Force, Leupold, Premier, USO, etc..) will retain it's value! So if you feel that long-range isn't for you... I'm pretty sure you'd be able to get your money back in no time.

Yeah- I looked at it and I hear ya, but I'm just not ready to spend that kind of dough right now. Maybe if he was up for a partial trade, but the listing says "no trades".

I have both of those and they're really nice scopes. The SS 5-20x is $1300-$1500 and is bad ass for the money. I also have the 10x fixed running on an AR and a trainer, best optics deal you can get for the money. PM if me if you want to check them out. Still stand by my recommendation...[Beer]
I have one on my Rem 700 PSS 308 and have shot it with this scope at the Pueblo match. Last match was a while ago, but I shot a 310. It's glass is better than any of my Leupolds, it's repeatable, and in your price range.
