Burris MTAC 1.5-6 for my Bushmaster BR308 O.R.C.?

Hi all. I've been reading about sights/optics for my Bushy 308 ORC all evening and I'm about nuts now. I wanted to go with the Bushmaster B.M.A.S. flip-up iron sights but that was too damn confusing re: what I'd need to buy to attach the front sight (this is my first AR so I'm still learning what everything is called on the rifle and that makes it confusing). I wish I had bought something with iron sights already installed because I prefer to learn a gun using iron sights before using optics on it (so I guess if anyone can lead me in the right direction for that, I'd be most appreciative).

Barring that, am I correct in believing that the Burris MTAC 1.5-6x-40mm scope would be good if I want to be able to see to shoot from close quarters out to around 3oo yards? It's the one that seemingly fits what I'm able to spend on a scope now. I'd even settle for a solid red dot or holographic sight with no magnification right now (see earlier comment re: learning a gun).

Sorry for the rambling...as I said, I've made myself nuts with this stuff today LOL

I've been looking at that same scope for my AR-10 along with the Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6.5x scope. I think I may try the Bushnell, I like a true 1x low magnification for close shots.

Depends on what you are doing with it. I run the MTAC 1-4 on my competition ARs and I have no problem on 2 MOA and larger targets out to 600 yards. My .450 Bushmaster has the 1.5-6 MTAC on it. It is a little slower on transitions (maybe 1 to 2 tenths or so) on targets inside 50 yards, but I have a little more precision out past 200 yards with it as compared to the 1-4. My .308 has the 4.5-14 MTAC which is good out to 1000 yards.

You can still get Tac30 1-4s as well.

longrange - I would prefer true 1x magnification too so the 1-4 may be the way I go if it works well for an AR-10. The reason for the 1.5 was that I thought the reticle was different (I think that's the right word). It appeared that it was better suited for an AR-10. Am I wrong about this? I'm still learning so I hope my questions make sense.

Mark - I am joining CRCI so at some point I will want to try longer range shots. But for now, I was looking for something I could shoot at the range RW Swainson and 303Arms use (170 yds to the steel plates from bench rest and 300 yds from the top of the hill) as well as for a little close quarter training. That's really my immediate need. I'm not sure if I could or would do competition with the AR-10 but I wouldn't rule it out if I could.

I keep hearing things at places like Dick's and Jax that this or that will work for an AR-15 but not an AR-10. As if I don't have enough to learn already LOL.

Based on your response, go with the Tac30 or the MTAC. The reticles are prety close and regardless, you will have to calibrate them for your ammo. I'm not sure that RW or Andy know how to do that, but I'd be more to meet you either there or at CRC and work a ladder with you. I'm friends with both Andy and RW so I am sure it would not be an issue.

Awesome! Thanks, Mark. I'll get moving on buying my scope so hopefully I'll have it when/if RW has another Open Tac day on a weekend. BTW...it's RW's fault I bought an AR-10. Last month he let me shoot his Armalite out at the Bennett "Farm" and it got me totally hooked. I've only met Andy once, at the Ruger Rimfire Challenge this year, but he came across as a really nice guy.

Agreed. Shot Steel Challenge with RW again last weekend and, as usual, he spent a fair amount of his time helping me and others shoot better. He's an awesome teacher. He helped my wife a great deal too when she opted to come out and shoot SC with us.

Would the above mentioned scopes work with the .300 blackout? I built one and I am running an Eotech w/ magnifier, it works great but would like to switch to a simpler set up.

I am planning in the 1-4 on top of my .300BO. Again, the calibration might be off, but they are not really on for a lot of .223 anyway. Once you run the numbers and verify, it is a very fast and accurate set-up.
