Picked this up today ... holy crap the seller is a shit photographer, the damn thing is in near perfect condition! So I'm quite pleased (if I get a chance to shoot new pics I'll post them).
Now I need to pick up a Tyler T-Grip, Desantis Nemesis and a few boxes of .38 (at least one box of Federal HST 130gr +p ... won't put a steady diet through it but will carry with the hot stuff).
Anyone on here have a copy of "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson"? Kind of curious what year mine is from. SN on the heel is 417J41 but there's a different number on the crane (59227 with either G5 or 65 underneath it . The one scratch on the gun goes right through the G or 6. Oh and its a Model 38, no dash ... so I wonder if its had the crane replaced?)
Sent you a PM, Z.
Are you sure on that serial number from the bottom of the grip frame? I have the 4th edition of SCSW, nothing matches and I’ve never seen a letter in the middle of a J frame serial number. The crane number is an assembly number, nothing more. The no dash ran from ‘57 ( when Smith started numbering guns) until 1988 when the -1 came out. The barrel pin was eliminated in 1982.
The “J” letter prefix on the serial number started in 1969. If BG has better info I defer to him.
