My bench will be 61" wide, 31" deep and I think I chose something like 42" tall. I had limited space to work with for where the bench will be going, and if I recall, the height would allow me to sit on a stool or stand and reload or work on guns. Although now that I write that down, 42" seems a little low... Guess its time to measure again.

My bench is 4x4 for legs, then a 2x4 brace all around the base of the legs, at 8" off the ground. Putting a layer of plywood on top of that to use as a shelf, and I might but a cross brace (at the middle point of the table) for support.
Top edge braces will be 2x4s, topped with either plywood or a blank slab door (1.5" thick for excellent stability). Still haven't decided if I will put my press on a strongmount of sorts to raise it higher and that could allow me to have the entire press/mount system bolt on/off the table for when I need a huge workbench.

This ho is disappearing into the forest for the next 4 days. http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/...ps939de5f9.jpg

All of a sudden I have a nagging cough that won't let me sleep... [Mad]
I was thinking about just using 2x4s for legs with a bottom shelf of 3/4" plywood, and a top surface of 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood glued and screwed for awesome sturdiness. I helped my dad build a bench like that when I was a kid and he mounted several tools to it including a riveting press, grinders, a drill press, and several bench vices. Everything was rock solid and the surface was perfectly smooth and level.

Sucks about the cough, you should threaten to kick MrsBadger out to the guest bedroom unless she stops coughing. [LOL]
I keed, I keed.
Sounds like a good bench, two layers of 3/4" plywood sounds just as sturdy as a slab door, probably cheaper too if you can get both out of one sheet of plywood. I don't know much about woodworking, in all honesty, I'll be surprised if whatever bench I ends up sitting level.

Yeah, I ended up moving to the guest room. This bed is more comfortable anyway.
I really need a circular saw...
-
Oh YOUU had the cough, nevermind, my bad.
I have a circular saw, but what I really want now is a miter saw as I seem to have some difficulty getting square cuts on the ends of 2x4s. My Fiancee wants me to put up crown molding eventually, so I figure I'll be able to get the miter saw for that. Yes, I know there are special crown molding jigs. Which I plan to get AFTER I get the miter saw, use it, and say its not the right tool for the job. :D

I would think 2 pices of plywood sandwiched between two doors would be best!

This morning is not going as planned.
