Eurocopter is test flying and preparing to deliver the first AS532AL cougars to the Albanian Armed Forces.
The first of five aircraft ordered, FA-630, has been flying from the company's plant at Marignane near Marseille since late last year.
Albania ordered the helicopters under a €78.6 million contract in December 2009 and all five aircraft will be deliver by early 2013.
The Cougars are the first new aircraft purchase made by the Albanian Ministry of Defence since the end of the Cold War.
The largely Chinese and Soviet-built fleet of helicopters, which once dominated the forces, have been retired from service and replaced by donated Agusta-Bell Hueys from Italy and ex-German military Bo-105s.

I was with 1-7 FA 3rd MST out of Schweinfurt from 03-06. We had some newb leave an open MRE underneath his cot and we woke up to a boar in our GP while were out at FTA. Talking about a rude awakening. We also had a few charge through while we were on stand two one morning, needless to say we scattered. I do miss being on the line though, that was always a blast, regardless of how wet and cold it was. As soon as I got inprocessed I left for Bondsteel for a few months, then we left for Iraq in Jan. 2004 and got back April of 2005. So I only got to stay in Germany for about a year and a half.
