In the winter of 2011, the house next door to mine burnt to a crisp. It was actually a pretty sad thing because a couple folks got hurt really bad, I think even a young kid died.
My house had extensive smoke damage, including a bunch of uniforms and stuff the Army gave me. I had the official DoD value sheets for every item, and explained to the adjuster how each item was ruined beyond repair and had to be replaced. As an 'O', all that money had to come out of pocket. Because I did all the homework, the adjuster just wrote the check, which ended up being almost $20k for stuff and almost $35k for the clean up.
