The mirror (glass) is better than anything we can produce today. Sure, the telescope weighs about 80 tons MORE than necessary and yes, there are focus/slewing backlash concerns but we are capable of eliminating those issues with clever servo engineering and lookup tables. It's also one of the only (if not the only) wide field capable telescope in the southern hemisphere. Since the instrument is $6M, the survey costs ~$10M (for operational costs through 2020), it is ridiculous to spend $100-250M to build a telescope for exactly what we need when what exists works perfectly fine!
