I think the previous owners must have updated the electrical at some point. When the inspector tests that the outlets have a ground, they'll say, "Yep, must have."

I'm going to look into this before I do anything. If it's over my head, I'll end up paying someone else. If I can pull new romex one outlet at a time, I'll do that, even if it takes me six months.
The goal is to have grounded outlets and ferret out any bad wiring. If I screw something up, I'll stop and get it fixed. I've got plenty of offers to contact guys that know what they're doing, in addition to my own contacts.
Ultimately I want better than before. I know what I can and can't do, so if I can't do it, I'll pay someone who can.

To do this right, you have to do the home run (from your electrical panel) and the electrical panel needs to be capable of this, or it needs to be upgraded, which in turn requires an upgrade to current code of everything downstream.
