Out of all the things accomplished today, there was a pretty good scare at one point. At the homeowners suggestion, I plugged an air compressor into his dining room wall outlet and began to pressurize his sprinkler system for winter. He can't see very well, and also had some problems remembering which valves needed opened and closed. While I'm trying to figure out what controls what, the compressor has been running...and I noticed an odor...thought the compressor was getting hot. Some minutes later, I notice the smell getting stronger when I walked back into the house where the control panel is.
Checked the outlet on the wall and it must have been 150 degrees or higher, unplugged immediately...and watched smoke coming out of the wall. I about shit myself thinking we could have started his house on fire.
In short, finished that task, and then replaced the melted receptacle. I'm thinking it's time to have a professional come out and evaluate the breakers and service in the home.
