Micro pins and wood glue at joints, hot melt every 12-14", dime spot if straight, quarter spot if lateral stress.
Decent quality wood trim really shouldn't split if 16ga nails or smaller are used. If material < 3/4" be careful that counter sink not set too deep. The driver can cause matl to split. Don't nail closer than 2" to end of pcs.
