    Default Rifle question

This is a little off-topic, but you guys are the ones from which I need the most advice.

I'm creating plans for new rifle racks at my outdoor range, and I want to support the largest variety possible. Precision rifles are not only some of the more diverse, they are also people's babies and you treat them as such.

While measuring the existing racks I had the opportunity to measure up a Mosin-Nagant; butt to center of forearm around 33-34". Modern *cough* sporting rifles run around 24" for the same measurement (not that I have a couple I can test or anything). Since precision rifle can be anything from a "modern sporting" rifle to one of those twelve foot monsters I saw on the silhouette range a couple weeks ago I was wondering if you guys could give me some measurements from butt to (roughly) center of the forearm for anything you would even consider racking at a range. For those of you with scopes, could you also let me know how far above the bore line the scope extends so I can make sure we have clearance?

My current plan is to put supports at 24" and 33", but there really were some LONG guns at the range, and I'd hate to stop them in the wrong place.

If that weren't enough, for padding I'm thinking of everything from closed-cell pipe insulation to just making the surface of my rack material glass-smooth. The concern is anything like felt or carpet would retain moisture and dust on an outdoor rack (neither of which is metal friendly), so I want something that will either repel water or dry nearly instantly. Does anyone have thoughts on what they would prefer as padding on a rack?

    Thanks for your help!

Fair question, but unfortunately, I'd never rack my rifle at the range. Bump the thread.
