    Default Question for jerrymrc

If memory serves me, you might have a small amount of FAL knowledge.

What are some decent quality handguards for the platform?

Looking for something in black, not wood.

I was thinking about a set of surplus metal ones but I'm not sure if they would get too hot with normal use.

    Thanks in advance.

That's the ones I'm leaning towards. Just not sure if they will get really hot and burn my little paws.

Sorry I missed this. STG metal HG's will get hot. There is a joke about them and chicken mits over on the files. Century had a plastic copy but they are not for 3 gun use if you catch my drift.

The basic black glass reinforced HG's are good and come in both bi pod cut and regular. The aftermarket penguin ones are a copy and not bad but they stopped making them about 5 years ago. I use there furniture on my camo gun and back in the day came in colors. The set I have was originally tan but black and brown were options.

DSA also has there copy's but I have not seen what they go for these days.

For just a metric mutt these would work. http://www.dsarms.com/Argentine-FAL-...ctinfo/021ARG/

Thanks for the response. I had assumed mine were plastic until I took them off the other day. Looks like they are metal. Think I'll just try them first and see just how hot they get before I make a decision about replacing them. I'm not the kind of guy that does "mag dumps". I seldom fire more than five shots at a time and will usually let my rifle cool off before firing the next five rounds. The metal ones might suit me just fine.

    Thanks.

Leave the gun out on a day like today for 15 min. then grab the hand guard with your bare hand.

Even my G-1 I had the century plastic as they used the same Stg-58 HG's as yours. That metal is no joke here in the sun. There is a reason that FN went away from them by the late 50's.

Want something cool and black for it? Buy a set of FNC HG's and I will fit them for ya. They used to be cheap and I came up with the perfect item to make them work. Click image for larger version.

ID:	30759 Just some thoughts. I would bet with a little thought and some work I could make a set of AR MOE rifle length HG's work. They already have the Fal/Buick 3 side ports in them.

    Just something to think about.

Hmm. I hadn't thought about grabbing it after it had been in the sun.

Looks like I'll have to give it some thought.

Those would be "Cruiserline Ventiports" in Buick vernacular.

Ray - If you're still looking, I have a set of black penguin HG's you could try.

I would just get some surplus imbel handguards if you are looking for something utilitarian. They are thick glass reinforced plastic resin. Tough and cheap.

Stay away from metal unless they are just for show.

So, I now have two different sets. I have some metal STG-58 ones and some plastic penguin ones. Both are nice. I'm partial to the feel of the metal ones but I do see where the plastic ones might be a bit more functional.

Perhaps if I want a little winter project I will pick up a set of the Magpul MOE rifle handguards and see if I can make them fit.
