    Default 20 moa scope mount?

Just starting to get into the long range game, And I just bought a savage 10 fcp .308 with a 20 in barrel. And I am looking to get a new scope. I'm planning on using this rifle as a double duty gun for both deer and longer range target shooting. The scope that I'm looking at is a swfa ss 3-9x. It has 81 moa of elevation adjustment. Does that mean that I would have 40.5 moa on both sides of zero? If that's the case I'm thinking I should get a 20 moa base for the perverbial 1000 yard shot. Federal 168 gr. match ammo should drop 421 inches in 1000 yards. Any thoughts or suggestions? Btw- I'm not going to take a shot at a deer at 1000 yards, haha

Your numbers look bad to me. It looks like you won't need much more than 35 MOA to get to a grand at any elevation you're likely to find in CO.

Nothing wrong with using a 20 MOA base even if you don't need it often. Yes, theoretically, you will have approximately 40.5 + 20 = 60.5 total up. Scope-wise, the SS is one of the best starter scopes, the 3-9 will be good for hunting, but will make 1-2 MOA targets at distance a challenge. A fixed 16x SS would be better for matches, but then no good for hunting.....

Agreed. You need a mount anyways, it'd be silly not to get the 20 MOA.

Thanks for the info on the mounts!. I'm now seriously looking at the 3-15x that looks like it might be the best option.
