The .308 is proven. If you can get 165-168 grn Nosler Partitions so with that. The Ruger American is the best cheap rifle you can get. Nicer trigger than the other under $400 hunting rifles. It's got a nice trigger and I've shot over 100 rounds through mine with about 5 different kinds of ammo including steel case crap. No problems. That being said I use a savage 11 in .308 to hunt with.

Article from Guns and Ammo about the .308. Just bought my .308 for this seasons hunting trip. I feel i did plenty of research before buying and i think it was the right choice, i guess we will see come the middle of next month.

Plenty of whomp, especially if you load for it.

My load has been proven on moose. 180gr SGK at 2800fps.

Who the hell hunts elk at 500 ft? There's a 100 yd delta in range to keep 1500 ft-lbs between 500 ft and 8000 ft with a 168 gr at 2700 fps.

What's your load, and what are you shooting it in? Seems kinda hot.

Who needs a 300 win mag when you load a 308 like that. I for one always wanted published data for "BOLT" action 308 loads that are pushing PSI limits of what the 260 rem is loaded to

Yeah I would have to ask what your load is, barrel length, and is that chrono'd out of your gun? I checked it against Hodgdon and Western powders, and posted velocities are 200fps less at best. Some show a little higher but not by much. You're likely way over pressure, and could be unsafe in many barrels that fit tighter. 300wm is an easy 3000fps with 180gr loads all day, and the '06 is right in the middle around 2800 legit. 300RUM is 3300 as well. 150-200fps does make a sizeable difference in energy, and bullet expansion. Regardless of the nitpicking though, no flies on the wall for the 308win. It'll kill elk within acceptable ranges with decent marksmanship. I don't use one simply because I don't own one, and I have a lot of other toys to choose from that are different, and stir debate

Alright, I went and pulled some notes.

It was actually 2720-2730, not 2800. My bad. Its been a few years since all the work up was done. Actual chrono numbers, measured 12' from the muzzle (seems to show more repeatable readings than 10' when pushing things fast like this).

IMR 4064 is the power we used. 45.5gr (just slightly over max load). Hodgdon spec's 4064 as 2683 with 45.2. Yes, they are both compressed loads. I know, I know, we are pushing the limits and everyone I talk to screams about how unsafe it is.

We religiously worked up to this with small increments checking for signs of over pressure, cratering, brass flow, any known pressure issues (even did some cut away cases to check the internals of cases that we ran at these pressures).

Run out of a Savage 111, a Kimber Montana, and a Frankenstein Remmy bolt rifle.

They hurt like a SOB to shoot. 3 for zero check each year, and 1-2 for hunting season is plenty.

Either way, two of the guys in my hunting group have bagged moose with these rounds. Both dropped with a single vital shot.

We only built that round because we all shot .308 anyway, and wanted something that we knew would take down any game we went after here in America/Canada.
