I just started looking as well so I'm interested in what you've learned. These look decent for what I'm looking for (garage, driveway, front and back yard) but I've never had a chance to use any of them. http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-FI8910W...+camera+foscam

Anyone here do home surveillance installations?

I started by googling for reviews on cameras or systems and didnt have much luck. I have mostly been shopping on Amazon because they have a lot to look at and some of the reviews have pictures of the camera images.

The model you posted is one of the ones I'm considering.
I have also been looking at various bullet cams
    This one looks decent,

But I'm kinda leaning towards a wifi setup because I plan to mount 2 of the 4 on my detached garage aprox 35ft from the router and the other 2 on the house so not having to trench and run wires back to the house will be a plus.

Get yourself a Alfa AWUS036H, set it up in ap, bump it up to 1 watt, throw on a yagi antenna (directional) and point at camera. That should give you some serious distance. Anything beyond that will involve breaking out the antenna on the camera.

I know it costs $$$ for any solution, but PPoE is the best choice for the house. For a spotter, get one of those battery jumper dodads, and 2 laptops (1 with a camera) as a possible idea. The one with a camera goes down range, and the other stays at the bench. Remote into the camera system and there you go. You're limited to about 300yds though with the laptops minus the in between router. If you really want to make it work better, get a second battery pack, put it halfway in between with a good wireless router and a wireless camera that has PTZ...

    Battery pack:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...-Pack/_/N-2629 (this is just to demonstrate the purpose)

12v DC to 120V AC conversion:
http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page...2v%20converter (you need this to convert the wireless router if ur using one, and for the laptop plug in)

    Wireless Router:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/802...bit,19851.html (something like this, make sure it's a N standard and gain adjustable)

    Wireless Nic
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008NQL82M/...SIN=B008NQL82M (once again something like this)

    SW for 2 laptop solution:
I run linux mostly, so I use VNC. If you run windows you can install VNC on it, or you can just use remote desktop. Cameras are a dime a dozen, but if you want to make your life easy get a PTZ usb camera...

    Camera:
    http://www.amazon.com/Wansview-Wirel...+Usb+Hd+Camera

If your not going to use the 2nd laptop, use the above mentioned camera or something like it. Your biggest issue is power...the bigger the battery pack the longer you're shooting. If you get the router/wireless gizmo, it will make your life a whole heck of a lot easier. It basically comes down to money...

The more i think about it, scrap the 2nd laptop...

I am interested in this as well!

Could you explain this a little better I'm a complete idiot when it comes to this stuff.
