Page 12 of Colorado Big Game Brochure from Colorado Parks and Wildlife states that there can be a total of 6 rounds in the chamber and mag combined. I would venture that since if you get caught breaking laws while hunting you can lose your hunting license for life (same for if you get caught poaching). Therefore I would say even if the law doesn't specifically state it, just block off a mag with a temporary block. Or buy a 5 round mag. I just don't think it's worth the risk of losing the ability to hunt. I have heard that these limits don't apply to varmint such as coyotes.

Bottom line: if you are using a semi-auto rifle for big game, magazine capacity of five rounds.

Not sure where the confusion comes from.

If you self modify a magazine with a block, ensure you do not posses the tool needed to remove the block in the field.

Best bet is pop rivet that is easily removed with a power tool if necessary after hunting.

Not 100% sure more than a temp block is needed in CO, but play it safe or talk to DOW to be sure.

The text in the brochure is not very clear, that is where the confusion comes from. The text of the actual rule that I posted is very clear.

I had asked a DOW officer and he said as long as there are no more than 6 rounds total you are fine. In my case I said I have a 10 round magazine, and he said it is legal to use as long as i only had 5 rounds in it and one in the chamber.

But always better to call and double check.

Dont push it. 5 rounds is the mag limit for a semi auto rifle in big game. If the wording seems vague to you, err on the side of the most limiting.
Besides, If you need more than that you shouldn't be out hunting big game animals anyways. Its hunting, not a self defense or home protection scenario.

The restriction is BS but it does appear to be the law. Just because one is hunting one must not be concerned about self defense? (not that I'd feel undefended with a semi 308 & 6 rounds)

Much like other nanny laws, this punishes everyone because of one or two assholes. WY has no such restrictions and does not seem to have issues with idiots or poachers taking down entire herds.
