Survival rifle
I'm looking into the AR7 vs. the 10/22 Takedown for compact survival .22LR rifles.
Seems the AR7 is quite a bit cheaper while have a checkered history for reliability.
10/22 has reliability on its side, common mags with other 10/22's, takes a bit more space.
Any thoughts on these, or other similar .22LR rifles?
the ruger doesnt hold zero with optics and is relatively heavy and bulky but you could press it into fighting if you needed
The ar7 like you said spotty.
Why do you NEED a semi auto?
Why do you need a rifle?
What situations are you surviving thru?
Various answers;
The generic answer is some flavor of the m6 scout rifle; 22lr/mag/hornet over 410, ridiculously expensive for what it is, last I checked you couldn't find one for less than $600
Savage makes over unders in the 24 series, the J model is 22lr over 20 ga. Overpriced and HEAVY
A ruger 22/45 lite with/without optics is damned light and small.
The cricket series are inexpensive and highly packable, but single shot 22lr
The fighting AR with a drop in bolt could be used

What is your requirement for a rifle to be a "survival rifle?" Sounds like the ability to break down and reassemble easily is what you are after.

Kind of depends what you want to do with it. The 10/22 is not "backpack" light. There are several other options out there including a few that are under 1 pound. The Ruta Locura is based on a Crickett and The Pack Rifle are both single shot sub 1 pound. The Kel-Tec SU22 is folding and 4 pounds. Also, if you pick your parts carefully, you can get a match grade AR-22 in the 3-4 pounds range as well.

What I'm looking into is something that might be good for small game, and for last ditch defense purposes. Also, I'm looking for it to be light, easily carried and inconspicuous.
In retrospect, it sounds like a reasonable quality .22 handgun might work just as well?
Probably. Maybe even look at one of the .22Mag handguns.
I don't think of it as a survival rifle, but my Kel Tec Sub2000 chambered in .40 S&W will accept mags straight from my Glock 22. The barrel on the carbine gives me an extra 200 ft per second and with a little practice and some holdover it will hit man sized silhouettes easily at 150 yards.
Personally, I don't think there is anything more versatile then a 12 gage shotgun. Easy to swap barrels and the variety of types of ammunition that can be used is better than you will find in almost anything out there. Put a pistol grip on it if you want it short, but I like having a stock on mine.
.22lr firearms are great for small game and if cost is an issue, you probably won't find anything cheaper and more accurate straight out of the box than a Marlin 795 or 60.
Don't just settle on one, get them all and then you have choices. Choices are good.

I have a Marlin Papoose...it would keep me in small game, large game with a head shot and I bet I could shoot a fish with it too! I managed to get a 25 round mag too!

I thought those AR7's were pretty neat until I spent some time with one in-person rather than just pictures I'd seen. It'd be overpriced at $50.
