Shooting in Summit County wilderness areas?

I have a friend who wanted to try skiing and shooting like in a biathlon (except I think he wants to use a .22 pistol instead of rifle). He was wondering if there's any particular place in Summit County that he could do something like that without getting into trouble. I'm presuming he plans on using cross-country skis on National Forest land. Anyone here do anything like that? Any advice I can pass on to him?

If he looks at coloradobiathlon.org he can do the real thing instead of pretending in the woods. I have a friend in denver that does biathlon here in co. I will try to get a hold of her to see where she practices.

The colorado biathlon club maintains a range at the eldora nordic center and at the snow mountain ranch ymca of the rockies nordic center.

I don't ski or know anything about Summit County. That said...if it's out in the middle of the National Forest:

Yeah, just have to follow the usual national forest rules.. so many yds off the trail and so on..

Which is why I told my buddy that I'd post his question -- I knew someone here would have good info. I don't think he wanted to compete in a real biathlon but wanted to see how it was. Frankly, so would I -- and I have proper target quality .22s -- so maybe I'll have to look into it myself.

Here's a map of the Nordic Trails at Eldora, you can see the Biathlete Training Area marked. I've never been to that area of Eldora, I'm usually riding the lifts so i don't know exactly what they have there. If you want to scare or piss off a bunch of Boulder Hippies now you know where to go. Nothing like skiing with a rifle on your back.
