This was in my garage when I moved in. It was always awkward to use because it was so difficult to turn you would break up a sweat. I realized I could probably freshen it up since it is an old tool, and decided to put on my Wranglerstar cap and take a look at it. Sure enough, all it needed was some axle grease and this thing turns like new with no resistance. For every one turn of the handle, the stones move 9 full revolutions. Here it is all cleaned up.
This thing make sharpening and re-profiling edges a BREEZE! The stones are pre-angled so you just stick the blade in the groove right between the stones. The heavier the blade, the more difficult to use, as the heavier things (ax) tend to bounce. The heavy stuff will bounce out of the groove and land your blade right on the flat of the wheel, ruining your progress. It makes a perfect angle every time. I've sharpened stuff that I've had for over ten years that never had a real edge, so remained dull. Here are some examples.
This cheap Chinese knife from BUDK never really had an edge. Until now.
Some cleaned up axes. With a little work, I was able to get one ax to even shave a little hair. Never thought I'd get an ax that sharp.
Liberal use of WD-40 and fast spinning gets your undershirt dirty though.
