Default Tatler Reusable Canning Lids: Just Got Me Some

So, I bought 3 dozen Tatler lids to see if I like them.

They look cool and all. One concern I have:

The lids are plastic. Plastic is porous over time, anyone else concerned about this like I am? I mean that is why we use Mylar for other packaging/preserving, right?

This is what I was thinking on doing. The stuff that I use regularly (stock, etc) is probably what I will use these for.

They also don't "pop" either... how the heck do I know if they are sealed? Tug on the lid? doesn't make me feel so confident.

I've heard many people love them. What's the attraction - the long term cost savings due to reuse? I'm still relatively new to canning - only a couple years at this point, but are the metal lids really that expensive?

I'm definitely curious to hear what you end up thinking of them.

There is some potential savings. The metal lids are not expensive at all (metal lids are cheap when they are on sale, sometimes only a couple bucks for 12) and $11 for 12 tattler lids. I just like the idea of a reusable product. After all this is the Preparedness Section , and I always had in the back of my mind, "what would I do if I could not get the disposable lids anymore?"

Some stuff that I have canned and do not use often are several years old. If the lids are plastic and plastic is porous I see potential for many issues.
    - Oxygen incursion through the porous plastic.
    - Food molecules into the plastic from heating/pressure into the porous plastic.

I also am very very particular with my canning, I am very strict when I am doing the canning, with procedures/recipes/quality of the items I am using. I hear Botulism is not fun. So when I open a can of preserved food, I go through the checklists of determining if it is safe to eat (even though I may still be heating the contents. And ensuring the seal is still intact through checking the button is important to me along with the vacuum sound.

Yeah, I suppose that if you are living off your canned goods you will be not storing stuff as long, before you eat the contents.

Tatler had a huge sale about 6 months ago. Like 50% off huge. So I bought a few hundred. I haven't used them yet but plan to put them to good use once the fresh produce starts rolling in.

I got them for the same reason as others...to have a more sustainable supply of canning equipment. I will still use one time use lids, while they are cheap and plentiful, and I keep a large supply of those on hand. But the Tatler lids will be my reserve.

I guess the next question is, does anyone else have an idea/plan for a sustainable heat source for your canners?
