Based on the description in the first post (not sure if it was exaggerated but it sounds like it's in pretty rough shape), if it needs to look good this year, get a rototiller and after a day or two with that, lay sod. It's not as costly as one might think and it's instant-lawn.

I had a serious weed problem years ago that I just couldn't take care of. Pulling them was a temporary solution since if you didn't get every bit of the root out they would eventually come back. I finally broke down and started having Trugreen come out and treat them. I no longer have a weed problem. Now, if I could just get my stupid sprinkler system working better maybe I could keep the darn grass greener. I'm getting close to just paying someone to come check it out or replace the heads or something. My back yard is the main problem are. It's a little over 10,000 square feet of grass and has practically no shade so the sun just beats down on it constantly. I should probably plant a couple of trees back there as the grass that does get shade seems to do way better back there. I just need to find a tree that will grow quickly rather than one that takes ten or fifteen years.
