    Default Sunday Coyotes

We were out chasing coyotes Sunday and had a pretty good day. The first stand Jeff and I had set up a little ways from each other and had 3 come to the caller. I kept thinking why is he not shooting? We were filming so I was thinking he was letting me get all the footage I could. They left and then returned for round two. Still no shots rang out. After they had left. Jeff came over to tell me his firing pin on his rifle was froze up.
We went to another spot and saw one walking in about 400 yards infront of us. I quickly set up the caller along the ditch and we went and sat down. Almost instantly we had one coming in. He was at 75 yards and running to the caller. Jeff, got on him and I heard CLICK! Again..Jeffs gun wouldn't go off. I got on the dog and leveled it with a shot out of my 204. We had another bounding in from the left. He stopped at 80 yards I tried to get fancy and earhole him. Needless to say... I missed.

Next stand we moved to was along the same ditch about 500 yards east. Now Jeff was shooting my rifle. We were just about to give up and Jeff had stood up. A coyote appeared 200 yards down the road from us. As the dog was focused on the decoy, Jeff got ready. The dog stopped at 120 yards and Jeff was on him. At the shot the coyote jumped and spun around standing broadside. Jeff shot again and put one right over his back. This time the coyote didn't stick around and headed for the woods. I looked over to see Jeff hanging his head.

We made out final stand and had one coming in. He was trying to circle down wind. I was the only one to have a shot. Jeff handed me the rifle. I let him get to about 70 yards and gave him a dose, in the neck. He was down.

Saw 12 coyotes, shot 2 and missed 2. Should have been alot more but those things happen. All in all a GREAT day to be in the field.

Saw a bunch of yotes out during the afternoon on Saturday. I was taking my parents to the airport and saw 5 dogs just while driving! Don't think I have ever seen that many dogs at 3 in the afternoon.

I've got a co-worker that lives out in rural Ellicott that recently had a dog killed and another dog seriously wounded from yotes that tore through her fence but she isn't "ready yet" to let me go after them. DANG!

Still looking for a place around the Springs (there are a lot of 'em just East of here) that will let me solve this predator problem for them.

Good job on the ones you harvested!

I'd love to pick up 'Yote hunting if anyone wants to shoot me a PM. Getting tired of watching all the DVDs and mental hunting...

Funny, we have coyotes around downtown Littleton and one neighbor lost a dog to one a few months ago, letting him out to pee around midnight. Just like that. So I don't dare practice calling in the neighborhood with my Shelties.

And for some reason my wife won't let me get away with it in the house. Huh.

    Default What calls?

Just curious about kind of calls you guys are using. I have two mouth calls and only got to try them once. I didn't have any luck, but given that it was my first time using them and there was a 25mph wind blowing I'm not too surprised.

I've been looking for a reasonable electronic call. Any recommendations?

About the best 2 electronic calls that dont cost an arm and a leg are the Primos power dog and the Western Rivers predation. They run about $150-$200 or so. there are a bunch of cheaper ones out there but these 2 will perform great for the cost. Top of the line calls run from $500-$700 or so. Try here.

On the advice of the manager of Sportsman's here, I went with Predator Sniper Styx calls. They are a bit different than the Song Dog I also have, cut the air a tad better I guess, being aluminum. Both they and the Song Dog can produce a decent howl if the operator keeps tabs on where his dadgum lips are on the things. Well, I got my Shelties to yowl in a chorus, anyway, so I guess that's good enough for starters.

The little calls do a good rabbit distress/fawn distress... with the aforementioned qualification on lips...

Lemme know when you fellers want to do some Yote hunting. It will not be my first time in the field, but it will be my first time going for Yotes. I hear the Grasslands up NE are fair to good. It also occurred to me that some cattle folks just south of town might have motivation to let hunters in, if they aren't already overhunted. Seems Yote hunting is kinda popular. Figures.
