Default Need help with truck side mirror

Is this screw suppose to go down as far as where my key is pointing? If so what's the best way without damaging the threads? This is as far as I can go hand tightening it. Thanks.

If I understand you correctly, you're trying to screw the double-ended bolt (stud) into the cast housing?

If this is the case, then what I'd suggest is that you thread on two nuts on the upper exposed thread and lock them together by tightening one against the other using two wrenches. Once these two nuts are locked together, you should be able to get a wrench on the top nut and screw the entire bolt assembly into the housing.

It's tough to explain the process using only words. If this doesn't make sense, let me know... I'll scrounge up some excess parts and pieces and take some pictures

Along with NFAT's good suggestion, use some silicone spray on those threads, on the housing.

What is the length of the threaded end and what is the depth of the hole? What is the needed depth for whatever the other end attaches to?

    That answers your first question.

ID:	49597The best way to tighten the studs down without thread damage is to double nut the stud. Stack two nuts together and tighten said nuts together on to one another. Then use top nut to tighten the stud and reverse process to remove the nuts.

I believe there's an echo in this thread...

I have to admit that the picture is a nice addition...
