owning an auto knife

I use to carry an out the front Auto Micro Tech knife and did so for several years without issue. I never got officially questioned about it from on duty police officers. But I have several shooting buddies that are police officers and they all had the basic stance of "I know its cool and all, but is carrying it worth risking getting a Felony and you can't buy firearms legally any more?". After thinking about that fact, I stopped carrying it. As with others, my OTF Auto knife was nothing more than a glorified box opener so it didn't make sense to risk getting a felony over something like that.

After that I switched to a light weight ceramic blade knife and it works just as good at cutting open boxes as my OTF Auto knife did.

i've been carrying self opening knives for 30 yrs here, 15 back east.. The only response from LE's i've received over the years, What that cost and where you buy it? If they want to be all C.R.S about i'd wager 100% of them take and add it to their collection.

Technically, you can buy a 15 round magazine. Just not a 16 rounder. (Or more )

I really don't understand the logic behind making auto open knives illegal? Most assisted open knives I have seen open faster then the autos do?

I have a few Auto Benchmades but I would never carry them on a daily basis. ;-)

since when does it have to make sense... it SCARED somebody who could make laws... that's all the reason they need

So when he or she goes to confiscate it, Ask them if they'd like the box and warranty card.

- 18-12-102. Possessing a dangerous or illegal weapon - affirmative defense.
(1) As used in this section, the term "dangerous weapon" means a firearm silencer, machine gun, short shotgun, short rifle, or ballistic knife.
(2) As used in this section, the term "illegal weapon" means a blackjack, gas gun, metallic knuckles, gravity knife, or switchblade knife.
(3) A person who knowingly possesses a dangerous weapon commits a class 5 felony. Each subsequent violation of this subsection (3) by the same person shall be a class 4 felony.
(4) A person who knowingly possesses an illegal weapon commits a class 1 misdemeanor.
(5) It shall be an affirmative defense to the charge of possessing a dangerous weapon, or to the charge of possessing an illegal weapon, that the person so accused was a peace officer or member of the armed forces of the United States or Colorado National Guard acting in the lawful discharge of his duties, or that said person has a valid permit and license for possession of such weapon.
