    Default Home from Alaska

So Dad and myself got home from our Alaska trip and things have finally settled down enough for me to give you guys an update. The hunt was a 14 day multi species hunt. We were after Dall sheep, moose, and Grizzly bear. This trip was amazing even if I came home empty. Yes you read that right, I was unsuccessful in taking anything. The weather during my sheep hunt was bad, real bad. I had nine days of rain, snow, fog, and high winds. It seemed like the only time that we would get a break in the weather was when we would hike across the glacier to a new spot, and then the weather would roll right back in. We did seen round 60 rams but only four that where shooters. I was never able to get into a position to take a shot. The moose hunting was really tough as well. It was just to early in that area for the moose to move in and in turn we only saw a few bulls.

The country was some of the most intimidating and mentally challenging that I have ever been in. Hiking across the rock covered glacier and near vertical mountains only to find that the sheep had moved or spotted you, or that the ram you were headed for was and inch shy of legal after you had climbed 1800 vertical feet was heart wrenching. Sheep hunting gets in your blood. It is hard to explain how something that brings pain and anguish like this can make you crazy to go back. Dad was lucky enough to catch a six hour window of clear weather on his side of the mountain and took this nice ram at 128 yards.

Your dad tagged a good looking ram. Also, picture 4 of 7 is pretty interesting.

I was wondering how that went for you guys. Sorry to hear for the bad weather. How does work with the outfitter, do you get a discounted rate if you don't get anything and come back the next year?

did you see any grizzly or moose?

i didnt get to see any Griz, but dad did track a nice boar but before they caught up to him they spotted a huge bull moose. unfortunatly the bull was about six miles from camp. it would have taken about four days of packing meat to get it all out. we did see a few bulls, and i had a bull at 400 yards on the last day but we couldnt confirm if he was legal or not (moose have to be 50 inches wide or 4 brow tines on one side). so we had to let him walk. we spotted another bull that evening that was around 60 in wide but he hit the dark timber and never showed himself again. As far as a discount goes on a future hunt, that is all up to the outfitter. we are working on a deal for a later date, but they dont have to do anything as for as a refund.

pic 4 shows the glacier that we would hike across to get from one side of the valley to the other. The Glacier was what you would typically think of with all the ice and snow. The ice was covered by tons of rock and boulders from where it had carved through the mountains. like i said, it was brutal on your knees, feet, and every other part of your body.

Sorry you didn't get to connect on more game. Still looks like an amazing trip. Hopefully some day I will get up there for a moose and sheep hunt!
