It is not about what you and I want. Like you, I'm a purist and prefer mostly serious SF to the cartooning that they do. It is about the money and to make the most, they need to bring in a "New Generation" of movie viewers that don't know the original story. They did the same thing with the newer Star Trek movies. There was so much material to keep the story line going and keep it interesting, even going back to the beginning.

Screw the old fans, lets make some real money. Bwaaahahahahahahaha.

I'm actually enjoying the Star Trek reboot.

I'm hoping that multiple long running film franchises can get back to clever writing and character development in place of what turned into nothing more than demonstrations of special effects.

Good writing and character development, what a concept. And keep the sex and nudity to a minimum too, it takes up the time that could be devoted to the plot and characters. All you need is a kiss and then a fade or pan to get the message across.

Star Wars has never, ever been serious SF. It has always been a Space Opera with heavy elements of fantasy included for good measure.

If you want hard SF, go watch 2001.

I loved the first 2 movies. Third movie (Return of the Jedi) was trite and predictable. Episodes 1 and 2 were so bad I've never bothered with Episode 3. I didn't entirely like J.J. Abrams' reboot of Star Trek (probably one of the few SF fans who didn't) -- good stories, great action, poorly thought out continuity (both inside the movies and outside to greater Star Trek lore) -- but his penchant for reinvention would probably help with the Star Wars franchise.

As far as any muttonhead saying no one cares about the characters of Bilbo, Balin, and Thorin ... well, he's probably a liberal and maybe even an Obama fan ...

I thought every true Star Trek fan hated the Abrams reboot?
