Default Windows 8 password unlock from sleep

So I (coworker) have this Toshiba Laptop that is running Windows 8, and it just did something that is really wierd.

When you wake it up from sleep. It goes to the blue screen that shows the logged in user, and directly below it is a Password box. However no matter what you do you cannot type in the box or press the "ok" arrow button directly to the right of it.

The typical key combinations do not result in any reaction from the screen at all. The mouse finger pad works fine, and I am using the onvboard keyboard that is on the laptop.

The only thing I could do was hold down the power button to do a hard reset but that is just a temporary fix until it happens again.

    - Only research has come up with trying pressing both the CTRL buttons simultaneously to get the OS to start taking input from the Keyboard, and
    - Going into the "users" window and checking the box that requires users to type in a user name upon login.

Anyone else have any other suggestions on what I should try? I have not gotten to the point of it recreating the problem yet but it is just a matter of time.

Can you get a cursor to show up in the password prompt at all?

Next time it happens, hit the back arrow (up and to the left of the password box, next to the user profile picture). Try to click on the user or try another user and see if the keyboard is responsive there.

Odd problem, never heard of that....

No cursor at all. Cannot click on the wheel icon on the page or anything at all. The mouse pointer is normally an arrow, but when it goes over the password text field it turns into a hand. Anything that I normally would be able to click on even that back arrow gets no reaction from the screen at all.

These are not actual images...but it will give folks the idea.

This is where I am having trouble inputing anything. I cannot get a cursor in the password box, or click on any of the several icons, but I can move the mouse just fine.

When I press something on the onboard keyboard, this screen swooshes in from the top. So I know the keyboard works.

You can usually fix this by loading another OS...

In all seriousness, it sounds like a process quit responding...
I'd go to the "event viewer" and look for any unusual events at the time it went to sleep or was "awoken" and see what you can find.

ETA: it could be a driver issue... but chances are the Event Viewer will give you some clues.

I've had that issue on my work laptop before. It's not Windows 8. I just had to power down like you did.

Wow I have been out of Client Support for a long time. I forgot that even existed. I agree on the OS thing.
