Default Colorado license plate? Probable cause for a stop lol

One of my friends just got off the phone with his 20 year old son. The son just got back from spending a year in China on a religious misson, came home to Lakewood for a couple of weeks, drove to Minnesota to see family. Driving back through Nebraska spots a trooper following him, keeps on driving normal. Trooper pulls in front then slows down, his son passes him, gets lit up. Told he's being stopped for tailgating. Claims that's probable cause to search the vehicle. Places friend's son in back of the patrol unit-not cuffed-and spends 30 minutes looking through the car. Doesn't find anything (no surprise to my friend), gives the ticket and sends the kid on his way. Of course it's interesting it happened coming back to Colorado and not driving the other way.

It's great having Colorado plates on a car when out of state lol. Of course we know there will be illegal trafficking but I'm only venting because you couldn't find a straighter laced kid if you tried.

I think you think too much of it.

Personal dashcams could help the kidfight the ticket and possibly could have used it to avoid the search. I need to get one for each of my vehicles.

This....... It would be the only proof in court of the LEO setting him up for the tailgating charge and subsequent fruitless search. And how is tailgating probable cause for a search anyway ? Oh yeah, I forgot, it was Nebraska........

On average, I've heard, a cop can have a reason to pull you over in 1.7 miles. It is nearly impossible to drive without doing something that will get you pulled if the cop wants you. I have my dash cam running all the time.

This is the cam I have.

For those of you with dash cams, I wonder if putting a sticker on your window that said "This vehicle is equipped with a dash cam" would make an officer think twice before hassling you.

It would probably get you a tenderizing and arrested for Iterfering with a a police officer, especially if it was a one of the Denver PD officers that think it is illegal to record or photograph them.
