Scope base MOA recommendations for varmit rifle.

So I'm finally getting around to mounting my leupold 6.5 x 20 x 56 scope on my model 12 savage in 204 ruger. So I looking for a recommendation on MOA scope base if I should go with a 0,5,10 etc. It is only a 204 ruger so I think I won't shoot over 400 yards and the scope has 90 moa of vertical adjustment.

I think 20moa is about average, and what most shooters want/use. I wouldn't bother with 5 or 10. Zero if you don't want elevation or 20moa if you do. That scope has plenty of elevation.

Seekins are good. They are about a hundred dollars. They also have a recoil lug (not that a 204 needs it).
A little cheaper are the EGW. They have a regular & heavy duty, either would work.
On the high-end you have Badger at $150+/- I think they are good but necessarily worth the extra cash.
I have own all three...
Ken Farrell is probably the nicest you can buy. I installed one for a friend and it's great.

Yeah I'm going Ken Farrell mount and rings. I guess I was asking because I'm wondering if the extra MOA will limit my close in shooting like 50 yards or even a 100 yards.

At 400 yards your not going to need the additional MOA. 204 is a pretty flat shooter and yes, the additional MOA will be a PITA at shorter range.

But how can he be a true "Operator" if he can't use the phrase "20 MOA cant scope mount" while talking up his rifle ?

I do not have a MOA base on my 204 and regularly shoot PDs out to 400.

0 MOA or maybe a 5 MOA

Optics generally have the highest resolution/quality in the center of the glass.

If you plan on dialing for elevation, I prefer to have a base that centers the scopes erectors for your primary range or where you want the best glass and easiest eye relief. This becomes less of an issue as the quality of scope gets better.

Last summer I did a 5.56 long range build for shooting out to 800yrds with a Vortex Viper PST. Using a 20MOA base, the scope was at its prime when dialed in for around 600yrds. When I started using the scope for 200-300yrds on prairie dogs, it noticeably suffered in resolution and eye relief. I ended up pulling the 20MOA and going back to a 0MOA with all the short range shooting I was doing.

I have noticed this in other scopes, but it has generally been less of an issue as quality improves, Vortex Razor (Minor) and Steiner (Not discernable).
