    Post Cost of tree felling.

So what's the going rate to have a tree taken down? We just got a quote to fell two dead pines, maybe 50-75' on the tall one and half that on the little. They want $750 to take them down and leave them where they fall (my plan was to cut them up myself)

Do I have an unrealistic idea of what things costs because that sounds ridiculous. For 750 bucks they will stay right where they are.

I'll see if I can find the guy who did mine. I had 10 next to power lines and such that I didn't want to mess with. It cost me 1,000, and he fell the trees, cut them in lengths, and chipped and hauled off the slash.

Swingle removed two trees for me for $800, hauled all the stuff off, and removed the stump in the front yard too.

It ain't gonna be cheap, but dying trying to do it yourself is retarded, compared to the $800....just sayin. Give 'em a try and see what they say.

I had one pine removed last year. It was close to the house so I had someone do it. $300 to take the tree down and chip the slash. They left the logs and the stump.

I could see that kind of money if I wanted it cut, removed, cleaned up and stump gone. All I wanted was for you to knock over two trees and leave, the rest is on me. I was thinking it would be nice firewood. Hell for what they want I can get 3 times the amount of wood delivered and it would be split and ready to burn.

They are are in no danger of falling and you can't even see anything other than the tops when looking at them. I'll maybe get another bid but me thinks they are staying put.

My brother and I used to do it as a business back in MN when I was just out of high school. What makes it expensive is 2 things, first is insurance for the business, it's extremely expensive due to the nature of the work. (can be dangerous, and if something goes wrong, can damage property, etc) and the other is location of the job, driving/moving equipment to and from a job site plays into the equation along with the complexity of the job. If you've got 10 trees it spreads that out over the lot a bit, and with one or two the per tree price goes up.

That said, the quote you received does seem high to me, unless they are right up close to your house, or a neighbors house, fence, power lines, etc. If the job is straight away just felling the 2 trees, that's high. If there are obstructions that require having to climb the tree and bring it down in sections, then I'd say it's pretty accurate to possibly a low bid. Just depends on the complexity of the job.

If there's ANY chance of one or both of the trees falling on something expensive, make damn sure the contractor is well insured and bonded.

Get more estimates. A few years ago I had three trees removed. I had four businesses give me bids. There was a spread of almost $1000 from the lowest to the highest. All it is costing you is some time as long as the don't charge for the bid.
