    I run a CVA.

Get lots of range time in. Some powder will work better for your rifle than others. I discovered blackhorn 209 powder absolutely wouldn't run in my CVA without buying an aftermarket modified breech plug.

Also, after installing open sights on my rifle, I discovered I couldn't get a low enough cheek weld to use them because of the raised comb which was designed for using a scope. Had to get a new stock to use the open sights.

Get out early so you have time to make modifications you may need.

I'll post a picture of the two different breech plugs tomorrow. With the blackhorn in my CVA with factory breech plug, only 1 out of five rounds would fire. The ones that didn't would just spit out the barrel from the primer charge. I could literally go pick up the bullet 10 ft away. It wasn't until after two trips to the range that I discovered with my Google fu that blackhorn didn't work and there was an aftermarket breech plug available.

New breech plug has given me 100% reliability with blackhorn and very good accuracy.

I used FFFG Triple Seven in my CVA. I think FFFG might be the pistol powder, but I've fired the gun 14 times now and everything seems to be okay with consistent results.

Whatever you do, don't double load your muzzle loader! Good luck and be safe.

A little late to the game but I agree with encore, don't rule out the traditional. Much better reliability and more lethal than what some might have you believe, even with patch and roundball. Getting closer is half the fun IMHO. Not all that hard to maintain either. There is a primitive club in the Springs with some really nice people willing to teach.

I would be willing to bet that was more than a double charge of black powder. Looks like someone was trying to use modern smokeless powder.
