What are the actual damages that people are seeing in these units? I am looking at some left over tags in units 461, 59 and couple others. Has anyone been out to see what the actual damage is?

I think wasting disease was a bigger concern about 10 years ago. Not as much now. Follow DOW's guidelines regarding animals and being safe.
1996 I took a trip up to Rangley where I saw dozens of dead deer rotting. Pretty sure it was from CWD, a variant of mad cow disease. I would only eat deer and elk if there was no other meat. If you get this disease there is no known cure. I'm sure others will argue that it is perfectly safe. Last winter local doves were dropping dead from bird flu and now local rabbits are dying from tularemia and the plague. There is a map in this link...

Prion's are a bitch to kill as well - http://www.bseinfo.org/deactivationofprions.aspx.
There is no way to make prion infected tissue safe to eat.
Carcasses of infected animals can be deactivated into a sterile alkaline solution using an alkaline hydrolysis digester. This consists of an insulated steam-jacketed stainless steel vessel which operates at up to 70 psi and 300 F into which sodium hydroxide and water is added and heated and continuously circulated.
Yeah. I have seen a few animals in Oregon with it too. Was just wondering as the maps in the catalogs show red lettered areas that are known to have/had the wasting diseases and was wondering if anyone had seen anything.
Thanks guys.
I don't have the link handy but I found a site that color coded all the units with the relative risk of cwd based on historical evidence. Might do some googling for it. I seem to recall deer being by far the highest risk over elk with a lot of cases in the north 1/3rd of the state. I killed a buck right on the north border (gmu 7) last year so I had it tested by cpw for like $20 or something. It checked out but I waited 3 long weeks to get results before I chowed down.
