    Down sizing is easy as long as the brakes and suspension components will clear the wheels.

    As long as the wheels have the correct offset, the formula for downsizing (approximately) would be

    -10 mm section width
    + 10% aspect ratio
    - 1 inch rim diameter

    So in theory, your 225/40R18 should become a 215/50R17, however the R32 that came with 17 inch wheels was equipped with a 225/45R17.

    Assuming that the correct wheels are used, then no spacers or other sketchy bodges should be needed.
