Along those lines, I wonder what the city or county has to say about keeping chickens?

I have a coworker who lives in Bennett who was fighting with the city about having chickens. And that seems like a small country town compared to where Irving lives.

Growing marijuana in the back yard is fine and dandy. But, God forbid, don't have a few chickens to provide some eggs.

Folks will have to research local ordinances and HOA rules to avoid such hassles. We moved out of the city many years ago, primary reason was to avoid such BS.

No heat will be provided. I read that nesting boxes should be lower than roosting spots. I also read over and over that people initially build nesting boxes to fit one hen, only to realize that the hens like to cuddle, even when laying and larger boxes work better. Each of the boxes is about 13" x 10", so hopefully enough to fit two. After adding the straw I saw that some elevation would have been helpful. While I like the idea of extra light during winter, I don't want to run power to the coop. I have solar planned, but that is going to have to wait. Coop should be outside by today hopefully.

I've looked up the code in Thornton and I'm going to have to rework the slats on the front of the fence so you can't see through from the street.

We had 4 nests down each side with a roost bar about 4" out from nests that kept birds from pooping in nest while roosting. A flip down door gave access from outside the nests.

Certainly I can't be the only one who finds Irving's chicken adventure amusing.

Seems like a lot of trouble to me. Building habitat, taking care of the bird, possibly redoing the fence pickets at your house so you can keep it, etc.

Of course, keep in mind I'm not an animal person so I don't fully understand any love for anything outside my species.

Fence run in the front is a total of like 12 feet. Just a matter of adding a picket on each side. Wife changed her mind though, so I'll just get rid of it.
