You may want to seriously consider ducks instead of chickens, believe it or not. I went throught the process of thinking about chickens, then heard ducks were easier to maintain, more cold hardy and some breeds lay WAY more eggs than chickens, then eventually decided on quail as a starter to see if I'll dig raising birds. I am so far. I'll probably get a few ducks in the spring.
Golden 300 Layer Hybrid ducks lay about 300 eggs a year!
We had very good results with Buff Orpingtons for meat and egg production.

I think a lot of chickens bred to be egg layers produce around that 300 egg/year mark.

Wish i could have ducks. No room and yes they are loud and not allowed.
