Not exactly stockpiling, but I was for a while saving up my fuel points, then filling up a series of gas cans at the end of the month where I'd use all my fuel points at KS and buy two fillups or a bit more worth of gas, and then refuel the car from my cans. Guess it saved a little bit, but probably never recouped the cost of the jerry cans.

Only real way to go bulk for gas is to have a storage tank at your home and buy wholesale from a fuel distributor, IMO.

I have six 5 gallon cans on rotation right now and throw Sta-Bil in it. No problems so far.

I got all my cans at Walmart. They go on sale every so often for about $12.

$12 for a 5 gallon gas container is pretty cheap compared to what I usually see. I imagine you're talking plastic right?

Longmont airport has Mo gas (92 octane) for about twice the price of unleaded. It's real gas with no additives and no shelf life. This is all I run in all my two stroke engines (chain saw, weed trimmer, leaf blower...). The plow truck runs better on it too but only gets it when there is no other options.

I just re-filled a lot of my cans Friday with no-ethanol 91oct from Pynergy on Santa Fe. $3.199/gal and I was using the last cans I filled up for well over 3 years in small engines, which are a lot more picky than any car is going to be. I didn't use a preservative, but I did fill them up completely, including tipping the cans on end to ensure they had minimal airspace in them. Just remember to stand back if you fill them in winter and open them in summer, LOL.

If you want to spring for them, there are a couple places that sell really nice nato-style cans. http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/GJC20 for example.

Getting in a habit of cycling cans every month is probably more of a pain than you think it is, but if you really get in the habit, then 4-5mo old gas should be a non-issue if you use a decent can, and you don't have to go for the more eth-free expensive stuff if you just use it in your car.

Yes, plastic. These sit in the shed, so they aren't getting banged up or anything.

In my experience, the spout on cans like this make it totally not worthwhile. I know there are better options out there, but then you are doubling the price of your can, at a minimum.

Winter Pump gas with a double dose of stabil will still run after 3 years. Small engine or big. They're just bitchy to start.

The cheap walmart cans vent and will evaporate your gas. I've gone to nato type cans. But you can use liquid gasket on the cheap cans

Get a larger tank installed on the truck, store your gas in the truck. Always fresh.

Put an electric fuel pump/valve/hose on the same fuel line of the truck, then you can pump out gas directly off the truck as needed.


I keep a couple 5 gallon cans with stabil added, the gas seems to keep nearly forever. I haven't had any trouble starting anything with that stored gas.

I've currently got 25 gallons in 5 gallon plastic cans on site and I use for the ATV and every few months I dump into the car or truck. I'd like to move up to a metal 55 gallon drum with a hand pump but haven't made the move yet.
