What radio receiver?

Looking for a receiver (not transceiver) that covers a wide variety of radio bands. Of course preferring no to break the bank. Not intended as a regular hobby, more as a prep in case AR15.co goes down or maybe if society melts apart, that kind of thing.

Was looking at a Grundig 750, but at $300, the poor quality reviews have me rethinking it. I realize I just am not well versed enough in this arena to know what I am really buying. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Looking to cover shortwave or police type stuff too?

Most ham mfg have receivers too and a police scanner can have multiple purposes over just a receiver.

Base ststion or handheld?

So many things to consider.

You can buy a transceiver, just can't transmit without a license. If the quality/range set-up you are looking for can be had more affordably as a transceiver, I'd go that route.
Other than that, we'll have to wait for someone who knows more to actually answer your question. I think Mazin might be selling one right now as well.

I already have a couple Baofangs. Looking for a base that can accept a roof antenna. While I wouldn't mind having a transceiver, it typically doubles the unit cost and I have no need to talk across the world, just listen. More bands the better, but definitely Ham with sidebands.

Well nevermind just re-read your post and looked at the actual model number on Amazon. I have read and heard pretty good things about it and have not found much else in this area, but like you I am not very up to speed on these things.

One thing to think about is that most first responders have gone narrow band and in a few years most agencies will be pushed into digital. So for future planning, dual band and even analog and digital capabilities should be considered. Most of those units are pricy though.
